Asterios Polyp – Last Two Pages

Sep 15th, 2010

I waited a year and then found the perfect day to read Dave Mazzuchelli’s Asterios Polyp. I expect that this is the book that I will think and talk about more than almost any other over the next five years or so. Beautiful structure and precise narrative.

But I have some questions about the final two pages. Go over to Montevidayo to see my thoughts on this (and to share your own).

Edward Mullany: The Saul Steinberg of Microsoft Paintbrush

Sep 2nd, 2010

My friend Edward Mullany, who is a disturbingly impressive writer (and editor of Matchbook), can draw – and paint. I had no idea. And he’s been doing a lot work recently, and posting it as his new blog, The Other Notebook. There are photo-paint collages, paintings, and recently a series of cartoons done with Microsoft Paint. Edward lets his line go and get weird like Saul Steinberg. Go and book The Other Notebook, and see what Edward has been quietly chipping away at, hiding among the shadows of Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
